Travel Notes: No one just stumbles onto the North Rim. To make it there, it has got to be your destination. I steer south on Highway 67. The transition from desert to forest is slow, but sure. Open vistas exist no more. Mazes of contiguous twigs frame them until only small bits of blue show through. As I near the Canyon, autumn begins to explode in the forest. It's as if migratory clouds of golden butterflies decided to alight around the aspen trees. These branches hang onto their seasonal treasures. My foot unconsciously lifts off the accelerator. Yellow yields, wherever you drive.
