Travel Notes: My vertical limit is within tangible reach. Since two this morning my crutches and I have been trudging toward the highest point in the Lower 48. This field of snowy pinnacles (nieve penitentes) is the last stretch between my goal and me. A frozen image, without comparison, is the best keepsake to have for traveling back to the moment. I stop to catch more than just my breath.
